Exploring AP Science Courses for Future Scientists

For students interested in pursuing a career in science, AP Science courses might be an ideal stepping stone from on-level high school science to rigorous college-level science. Regardless of what specific field a student wants to go into, College Board offers a variety of science courses.

What AP Science courses are there?

Just like with AP History, there are several AP Science courses offered by College Board. These include AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2, AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism, AP Physics C: Mechanics, and AP Environmental Science. There’s certainly a science class offered for everyone! While the difficulty level of each course varies depending on the school in which it’s offered, AP Environmental Science is generally considered the easiest of the science courses. All of the other courses (and their exams) are considered fairly difficult.

What is the structure of the AP exam for science courses?

Just like with AP History, the large variety of courses means that the AP exam won’t be structured exactly the same for each course. Each science course does have a multiple-choice section, however. On top of that, each course has its own number of free-response questions. AP Chemistry has 7, AP Biology has 6, AP Physics 1 has 5, AP Physics 2 has 4, both AP Physics C’s have 3, and AP Environmental Science also has 3.

Pros and Cons of AP Science Courses

AP Science courses don’t often give students a lot of work to complete outside of class time. On lab days, a lab report may be given as homework, but this is usually fairly quick and straightforward. However, the main con to taking an AP Science course is the actual content, as well as the AP exam. AP Science course content is often extremely difficult, and many students consider AP science exams the most rigorous exams out of every other AP content category. With the right resources, however, AP science courses are certainly conquerable.
